The Audacity of Yoga!
Fri, Mar 9, 6:30-8:30pm
free
In this evening program, we will explore the inconvenient and often lacking role of authenticity in yoga as a reality-based spiritual tradition. We will discuss the role of authenticity as the highest expression of faith in ourselves on the path of yoga and healing. The spiritual path, like the healing journey, is a one-of-a-kind individualized experience because no two of us walk the same journey through life gathering the same karmas. Therefore, no two of us should be doing the same yoga, and we certainly shouldn't be doing "John Smith's Yoga" (only John Smith should be doing his yoga). We'll discuss yoga as a reality-based spirituality, the freedom of vulnerability, and the audacity of our own personal practice.
Yoga Psychology: A Skilled Mind in Action
Sat, Mar 10, 10am-1pm
regular: $50
member: $40
From Patanjali’s “Yoga Sutras,” to the classic Tantras, the mind in all its forms is a primary focus on any yogic path. At once, the mind is either the greatest tool to our growth, or the greatest obstacle. In Buddhist yoga, rather than bliss out, the mind is made sharp and clear like a diamond. Karmas are both created and destroyed via the mind, as the mind alone stands as the deliverer or the executioner of our spiritual development. In yogic psychology the mind is more than the sum of the brain and nervous system. The mind is prana, life itself. The mind is Shiva, the cosmic witness. It is the heart, which loves and reels with empathy. It is that which both sees and chooses our life’s dharma. In it’s highest form, it is the guru within. In ayurvedic psychology, the mind is considered the cause of all disease, and many treatment modalities are available to keep the mind clean and vibrant.
Modern Moksha: Liberation and the Clash of Karmas
Sat, Mar 10, 2:30-5:30pm
regular: $50
member: $40
In spiritual living a powerful duality (tension) often arises between the yogic desire to transcend the limitations of the ordinary human bodymind, with the householder twin urge to maintain it, to care and heal the body and mind. In short, whether to conform to nature or to trascend it altogether. In practice, yoga teaches us to dissolve karmas while our householder tendencies create and reinforce new ones by necessity. As yogis become more skilled, tension often arises between the desire for moksha (liberation) and the responsibility for family and work in the world. The vision of the Modern Moksha course is to help students to better integrate the impulse for liberation with the householder lifestyle needs of the modern western yogi. This course is designed to help sudents to explore the narrative and nature of this overarcing story in order to find the middle path where the two disciplines can share the wisdom of life.
Virya: The Divine Warrior Within
Sun, Mar 11, 10am-12:30pm
regular: $40
member: $32
Life sometimes overwhelms us and we feel powerless to the sea of chaos. In these times Yoga can keep us calm. It can also give us courage, power, and a spiritual weapon: faith. Not only faith in an unbreakable link to the divine, but more importantly, in our Self (atman, soul). A spark of grace is all it takes to kindle the Manipura chakra waiting dormant within the pilot light of the solar plexus. From there arises the sacred warrior, Virya, who stands in his/her essence fearless, in the company of truth. The great sword is wielded and the head of denial falls to the ground. We see these images in the sacred artwork of Devi, Durga, Kali, and Manjushri in Tibetan Buddhism. The archtype of the spiritual warrior does no harm to those who stand in truth, but wields extreme prejudice towards all obstacles on the path of awakening: denial, lethargy, attachment, arrogance, insecurity, avoidance, deception, and fear to name just a few. It is no contradiction for the Yogi to wield the sword that cuts through illusion to deliver us a solitary inch ever closer to our true nature. There is no himsa (violence). There is only ahimsa (non-violence) in the form of action.
James Bailey Private Consultations
Thur-Fri, Mar 8-9
Ayurvedic Assessment or
Yoga Psychology Session: $150
PRIVATE CONSULTATIONS
Private Consultations serve three purposes: (1) as a private space for students to discuss their personal health, spiritual and yoga practice issues, (2) to deepen and personalize the concepts of the weekend workshops, and/or (3) to receive a traditional Ayurveda Assessment or Yoga Psychology session. Sessions are open to everyone and one need not take a weekend workshop in order to sign up for one. Consultations are conducted on the 2 days prior to a weekend workshop: Thurs & Fri.
Two Types of Consultations:
1. Ayurveda Assessment Sessions include an ayurvedic constitutional (prakriti) assessment, ayurvedic diagnosis (vikriti), dosha and ama (toxicity) analysis, pulse diagnosis, with nutritional guidelines, ayurvedic lifestyle strategies and herbal prescription if needed. These are highly educational and practical sessions.
2. Yoga Psychology Sessions provide a private space to yoga practitioners to explore the inner journey of yoga as experienced in the real world. Where are we asleep, where are we growing, who we are in relationships, what obstacles (kleshas) are in our way? Personalized pratyahara witnessing and mindfulness meditation practices may be recommended if needed. Students are welcome to use this time to discuss any areas of their lives. The healing space James creates is intuitive, safe and elevating.
Consultation length: 85 minutes
