Balancing Poses with Jen Mullholand

9:30-11:30am, practice
Finding balance on the mat can be tricky. A lot of our balance practice can bring about a feeling of excitement, yet also a sense of fear of the unknown (like what might happen if we fall over!). In the morning practice, we will explore standing balancing and play with the root down to rise up concept. We will also spend time cultivating a deeper understanding of the core, where balancing resonates. The practice will be fun, playful and sweaty! Come prepared to work.
12-3pm, techniques
We will break down the balancing postures applying the root down to rise up concept. In order to rise, we must first find our roots - in the case of standing balancing poses, the feet. We will explore how being connected to the midline will improve our balancing postures. Also gain a deeper understanding of how muscle energy and organic energy (extension) play into balancing. We will explore the anatomy of the poses and also gain a better understanding of the application of dristi (gazing point) in balancing.
3:15-5:30pm, teaching skills (500hr trainees only)
Learn how to safely and effectively cue and refine standing balancing poses. Partner work with adjustments and teaching will also be included.
Forward Folds with Jen Mullholand

9:30-11:30am, practice
Forward folds, while nurturing and calming, can also be very challenging if the hips, hamstrings and lower back are stiff. These poses bring great joy to some and great frustration to others. In the practice, we will explore how to make these poses accessible for all bodies, thus creating an opening into the back body and deeper understanding of the mechanics of forward folds.
12-3pm, techniques
3:15-5:30pm, teaching skills (500 hr trainees only)
Learn how to make forward folds a comfortable and nurturing experience, even for the stiffest of students! We will explore how to use props to make these poses accessible for all bodies and also learn how to make these poses safer for overly-flexible students. Adjustment work will also be included.
Hips - Anatomy, Openers & Understanding with Ingrid Yang

9:30-11:30am, practice
Find joy in hip opening. We sit all day in our cars and at our desks, and such stagnation is often reflected in the tightness and discomfort in our hips. Understanding the hip joint, and the surrounding musculature, is important to releasing negative emotions such as stress, anger, sadness, and the key to feeling joy and freedom in our physical and spiritual bodies. Back pain? It could be your hips. Understanding the hips is a crucial step to maintaining health and mobility throughout your life.
The day will begin with a 2-hour class exploring hip openers and stabilizers, starting with a warming vinyasa flow before we move into some deep hip openers. We will explore both internal and external rotation, as well as learn therapies specifically for hips, even among those with long-standing pathology.

Closing Poses with Ingrid Yang

In our search for mastery of vinyasa flow and power yoga, we often forget to balance our practice and teaching with calming poses. Closing poses, restorative yoga and deep stretch is a critical aspect of our practice that balances the more obvious practices we typically seek in yoga. Restorative and deep stretch calm the nervous system and active the parasympathetic nervous system where we can truly relax and de-stress. Release tension and find optimal relaxation through a series of supported and deep-stretch poses that are held for several minutes. Open the body, quiet the mind and watch your tension disappear.
This workshop is appropriate for yoga students of all levels, as well as yoga teachers who want to learn how to integraterestorative and closing techniques into their own classes. With her medical background, Ingrid is specially qualified to teach this module as she has done in depth study on the calming nervous system and particularly enjoys teaching yoga for cancer therapy and therapeutic yoga.
