WELCOME

Thank you for your interest in Moksha Yoga Center's 2008 Teacher Training Program. This program is a foundation for your study of the ancient art and science of yoga. The basics and key elements and techniques of asana, pranayama, and teaching skills will be studied. The program is designed to give you a wide variety of topics, class settings, and experiences. It involves classes with not only myself, but also with a variety of local and national teachers. We are committed to giving you the best learning experience possible. We hope you will enjoy the program.

Daren's Background

My dharma is one of service, helping others to find and expand his/her true path. In this regard, I offer my knowledge of yoga in this teacher-training program. I have completed more than ten teacher-training programs and am still hungry for more. I have traveled to India on five occasions to study yoga, ayurveda, martial arts (Kalari-Payattu), music (tables), and yoga philosophy (Sutras), though a lifetime of study will never reveal all of the facets and perspectives that yoga has to offer. I've been studying yoga since 1989 (17 years) and have been teaching since 1994 (12 years). This will be the seventh teacher-training program that I have led. I'm excited to have refined what I have taught over the past several programs and hope to offer you an even better experience than before. I started Moksha Yoga Center in August 1999 and we now have 40 teachers, 35 volunteers, six full-time staff, and thousands of students. Moksha is now known as a place dedicated to yoga practice, experience, and knowledge.

Ways to Prepare for the Program

  • Establish a regular practice of 3-4 times per week. 15 minutes of Sun Salutes in the morning is better than nothing! Attend as many classes at Moksha as possible, experiencing different styles and teaching methods.

  • Create a balance between activity and rest. Most of us do not get enough sleep. During rest, the body and mind have a chance to regenerate. Commit yourself to getting at least 8 hours of sleep per night.

  • Eat a healthy diet rich in whole foods, such as grains, vegetables, and fruit. Reduce or eliminate the consumption of red meat, processed foods, caffeine, and alcohol. Drink plenty of filtered or bottled water.

  • Clear your schedule of activities, commitments, and distractions. This training will require up to 20 hours of your time every week throughout the year. There will be a break from classes in August.

Questions and Concerns

We understand that you may have prior commitments (weddings, family vacations, etc) that may cause you to miss class. We will make every effort to work with you to make-up the missed work. However, please limit your absences to no more than 1 weekend during the April-July program.

I will be in India until mid-March 2008. You may address all of your questions and concerns related to the program to Dawn Hayes at (312) 942-9642 or dawn@mokshayoga.com. If you need to contact me, you may do so at daren99@hotmail.com. I will not have convenient access to email and will not be checking email on a regular basis so please don't expect a quick response. Moksha's staff is ready to help you with your endeavor. I look forward to a fun and fruitful year studying yoga together.

Namaste,
Daren
