Learn the viniyoga principles for creating an asana practice. Explore the principles of combining postures, breathing techniques, chanting, and meditation in a therapeutic context. We will focus on how to make appropriate selections from these techniques, what is useful and what may be harmful, and how to modify the practice for different conditions. Emotional health is fundamental to the maintenance of OVERALL health, and the cultivation of our highest human potential. The ancients understood emotion as the complex interaction between our mood, cognitive processes, behavior, and physiologic responses. Gary will present the yoga therapy perspective and methods for working with anxiety, including leading an integrated practice that provides an example of how to transform states of anxiety, and promote a deeply restorative impact on the entire system.

We'll focus on psychological aspects of the human system, explore models of the integrated personality that emerge from Vedic teachings, and discover the science of meditation that the ancients developed for reducing suffering and cultivating our higher human potential. Recognizing the direct influence of thought and emotion on biochemistry, and knowing that positive states have a deeply restorative impact on the entire system, we are able to develop certain practices to transform negative qualities of mind, promote general well-being, and manage the symptoms of depression.
Gary Kraftsow has been a pioneer in the transmission of yoga for health, healing and personal transformation for 30 years. He began his study of yoga in India with T.K.V. Desikachar in 1974. He is a renowned speaker and teacher of the Viniyoga methodology at many conferences and schools nationally and internationally. In 1999 he founded American Viniyoga Institute, LLC. Gary has successfully developed protocol for two National Institute of Health studies: "Evaluating Yoga for Chronic Low Back Pain" and "Yoga Therapy for Generalized Anxiety." He is the Director and Senior Teacher of the American Viniyoga Institute; author of two books published by Penguin: Yoga for Wellness and Yoga for Transformation; and author of two educational DVD's: Yoga Therapy for Low Back, Sacrum and Hips and Yoga Therapy for Upper Back, Neck and Shoulders.
Gary graduated with a BA, Magna Cum Laude, from Colgate University in 1976, and received his Masters Degree in Psychology and Religion from the University of California at Santa Barbara in 1983. He began practicing at the Maui School of Yoga Therapy in 1983, and received a Viniyoga Special Diploma from Viniyoga International in Paris, France soon thereafter. Since then, he has become a renowned speaker and teacher of the Viniyoga methodology at many conferences and schools nationally and internationally.
