Corey first practiced yoga in Detroit in 1994. An athlete drawn to the physical challenge and mental discipline, Corey’s practice reflects his roots as a competitive bike racer who excelled in freestyle BMX: power, playful ease and grace.
He discovered Anusara yoga in 1999 in Tucson. The alignment and therapeutic aspects of Anusara helped him heal a painful knee injury. By 2003 he fully aligned his practice within the Anusara system. A yoga instructor since 2002, he continues to teach full-time in Chicago.
Corey grounds his teaching in anatomical precision and in the rich philosophical traditions of yoga. An experienced teacher of both the raw beginner and the seasoned practitioner, his classes offer extraordinary opportunity for growth, whether in a private or group session. He has completed over 1000 hours of teacher training and has studied closely with senior Anusara teacher Betsey Downing for over 7 years, assisting her in workshops, immersions and teacher trainings.
As an Anusara-Inspired® yoga teacher in the final stages of full certification, Corey will be one of only a handful of fully certified Anusara teachers in the region.
Corey encourages his students to discover previously unfound freedom, joy, and strength with a teaching style that is progressive, empowering and playful. With an emphasis on celebrating life and awakening the inner Self, Corey infuses Anusara’s heart-opening philosophy and life-affirming positivity throughout a challenging practice, building systematically to a demanding apex. Physical and energetic alignment, necessary for safety, become both metaphor for and experience of aligning with innermost truth.
Anusara yoga and its underlying non-dualist philosophy do not ask the student to renounce the world; on the contrary, Anusara urges the student to touch the world so profoundly that he or she discovers the Absolute at the very heart of reality.
