Vedic Chanting: Sound for Healing
Chanting the Invocation to Patañjali:
The Yoga Sūtras Study Series
A Krishnamacharya / Viniyoga Lineage Offering
Before āsana, before philosophy, before technique — there is sound. Join me for an ongoing chanting and study series rooted in the living tradition of T. Krishnamacharya and his son T.K.V. Desikachar, where the Yoga Sūtras are not merely read, but chanted, contemplated, and lived.
Each gathering will begin with learning and refining the traditional Invocation to Patañjali — honoring the lineage through careful Sanskrit pronunciation, rhythm, and breath. In this tradition, chanting is a method of study. The sound prepares the mind.
From there, we will begin chanting the Yoga Sūtras, starting with Chapter One (Samādhi Pāda). As time allows, we will continue learning additional sūtras each class, working steadily and respectfully through the text in proper sequence.
- Learn accurate Sanskrit pronunciation according to traditional meter
- Explore how chanting affects breath, mind, and nervous system
- Study in a progressive and relational way, as the text was traditionally transmitted
- Cultivate steadiness through repetition and continuity
Because of the progressive and cumulative nature of this work, this is not intended as a drop-in class. Regular attendance is strongly encouraged in order to build confidence, depth, and continuity of understanding.
As one of my teachers shared with me: Devoted students are treated with devotion.
All sincere and committed students are welcome.
